Djembe & You: Foundations is the first step in Mr. Norman Cristina’s calm-power djembe journey. This short, focused foundations course is designed for absolute beginners and for anyone who wants to return to the drum in a relaxed, confidence-building way.
Instead of “just banging” the drum, students learn how to create a clear, musical sound from the very first session by focusing on body, posture and tone.
The Foundations course is designed to be:
Students can move at their own pace: pause, rewind and repeat lessons as often as needed. The aim is not speed, but a steady, enjoyable start that feels safe, clear and encouraging.

Place and hold the drum in a way that serves you and your playing
Play the 3 basic tones with a starting awareness of the differences involved; the rest is conscious practice
Provided you follow everything said and offered you could start your journey to controlling your sound consciously
if you focus attentively and tackle each lesson without rushing and perhaps repeating, you might experience the start of a meditative nature of djembe playing

Norman Cristina B.Ed. (Hons) Music and E.M.Y., musician and music teacher with special training in Salzburg; plays piano and percussion and has experience in a number of genres (including among many others Jazz, Blues, Irish Folk, Gospel [bandleader of EnKor and VOCA]). Norman was in the first drum circle of Malta, with Renzo Spiteri, worked with Mousse Ndiyae from Senegal, performed in various percussion groups including at the opening of the Valletta 2018 Capital City of Culture (V18 CCC) in Birgu; he led the percussion section under the baton of Tim Steiner and conducted Citizens Orchestra (Mewga Muzika) during V18 CCC.
