Course Overview

Djembe & You: Foundations

Djembe & You: Foundations is the first step in Mr. Norman Cristina’s calm-power djembe journey. This short, focused foundations course is designed for absolute beginners and for anyone who wants to return to the drum in a relaxed, confidence-building way.

Instead of “just banging” the drum, students learn how to create a clear, musical sound from the very first session by focusing on body, posture and tone.

In this Foundations course, students will:

  • Learn how to sit comfortably with the djembe so the body feels relaxed and supported
  • Discover the correct tilt and position of the drum for a free, resonant sound
  • Understand basic hand placement to avoid tension and strain
  • Learn and feel the three essential tones: Bass, Tone and Slap
  • Start combining these tones into simple, satisfying patterns
  • Experience the first sense of “groove” rather than random hits

How the Course Feels

The Foundations course is designed to be:

  • Calm – gentle pacing, reassuring explanations
  • Musical – even simple patterns feel like music, not exercises
  • Meditative – repetitive grooves that help focus and relax
  • Accessible – perfect for all ages and all backgrounds, no prior music experience needed

Students can move at their own pace: pause, rewind and repeat lessons as often as needed. The aim is not speed, but a steady, enjoyable start that feels safe, clear and encouraging.

What Happens After Foundations?

This course is Part 1 of a 4-part journey.
After completing Foundations, students will have the option to continue with:

  • Part 2 – Sound & Body
  • Part 3 – Expansion
  • Part 4 – Mastery

Each next part builds naturally on this solid base. For now, this Foundations course gives a complete, self-contained starting point for anyone who wants to meet the djembe in a calm and powerful way.
